U.S. Model 1841 “Mississippi rifle” produced by the contract firm of E. Remington of Herkimer, New York in 1850. This single-shot, percussion-rifle features the original barrel bored to .58 caliber. The lockplate features a light marking of “REMINGTON’S / HERKIMER / N.Y.” forward of the hammer and to the rear a stronger two-line stamping that reads “U S / 1850.”
Overall length of the weapon is 48½” inches. The round barrel measures 33” in length, is fitted with an open rear sight and a brass blade front sight. Barrel surface is lightly mottled. The diameter of the last 2 ½ inches of the barrel has been reduced and a lug added to accept the socket bayonet. This alteration was done in 1859. Barrel surface is predominately clean. Breech tang is marked “1849.” The barrel marking at the breech is “U.S.” over “J.H.” over ”P” with the word “STEEL” on the left facet. Bore is very nice. Rifling is excellent.
Each of these M1841 longarms had black walnut stocks fitted with brass furniture and a brass patchbox. All brass has acquired a light patina. The stock surface is smooth with a pleasing oil finish. On the flat opposite the hammer are two faint government cartouche marks. Stock bears very few dings and dents. Brass buttplate features a faint “US” on the tang.
Lock plate and hammer have hints of case colors remaining. Mechanics are excellent. Hammer holds full-cock but not half-cock. Original steel ‘trumpet head’ ramrod with its dimpled brass head and threaded tip wears a dark gray patina overall.
Attached to the weapon is an original leather sling in good condition.
Original gun tools found in the patchbox are also present.
The well-made Model 1841 percussion rifle performed as a “Good and Serviceable Arm” for the US military and later for the Confederacy. [AD]
