This style of conversion was the invention of Jacob Snider, an American from New York. This design was used by the British Army from 1868 into the 1880s.

The overall condition of the weapon is very good. Overall barrel length is 39.25 inches. Rear sight is flip-up ladder type with slide. Front has mounted blade sight. Left side of barrel is stamped with numerous acceptance marks and “25” (meaning .577 caliber). Breech has Snider’s flip-open breech block and firing pin. The top of this block is stamped “SNIDER’S / [arrow going thru an “S”] / PATENT”.  A similar “arrow S” is stamped on the top of the barrel breech. Inspector’s initials C.G.B. (I think) are stamped in the bottom of the receiver. Mechanically the weapon is excellent. The bore is clean with worn rifling and some fine pitting. Retains a complete Enfield ramrod. All small parts remain: barrel bands, swivels, and even the original snap cap. Lockplate is stamped forward of the hammer with “TOWER” over “1870”. Behind the hammer is a Queen’s crown.  Rifle has brass trigger guard, butt plate, lockplate screw washers, and nose cap. All brass has a nice brown mustard patina. The wood stock retains its original color and shows almost no wear. Comes with reproduction leather sling.
