Model 1842, .69 caliber musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. The bore is lightly rifled and clean with minor pitting. No rear sight; does not appear to have ever had one. Worn viewer’s proof with eagle head. The breech plug tang features the date “1853” where the “5” is faint and the “3” is only visible under magnification. Original unaltered smoothbore ramrod is present and is complete with the threads. The hammer and lockplate are in nice condition with bright finish and only minor pitting. The US and eagle are stamped in front of the hammer. “SPRING / FIELD / 1853” is stamped boldly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate is bright and stamped with “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, trigger guard, nose cap, and swivels are present and in good condition. All gun metal is bright and clean.
The walnut stock exhibits an attractive original color and finish. The wood shows only the minor dings from age. No inspector cartouche is visible. A letter “T” is stamped into the underside of the stock about an inch in front of the trigger guard.
This is a very clean example of an 1842 smoothbore musket, dated 1853. [jet]
