The Alfred Jenks & Co facility in Bridesburg, PA had one of the largest contracts for arms awarded during the Civil War. This musket is one of their fine products.
Weapon was lightly cleaned at one time and has since acquired a pleasing look to it. The barrel is semi-bright with a pepper-like mottling over its surface. Front and rear sight are present. Rear sight has both flip-up leaves. Breech area has a strong “VP” and eaglehead. Top of breech is dated 1862. Bore has good rifling and is dark. Only very light dirt is present. Nipple is original and shows some light surface rust and dirt.
Lockplate matches the barrel in appearance. There is a strong spread-winged eagle and “US” over “BRIDESBURG” forward of the hammer. There appears to be a letter “O” stamped beneath “BRIDESBURG.” There is also a strong 1862 behind the hammer. Hammer surface matches barrel and lock and works well. Action is crisp.
All three barrel bands are present and stamped with a horizontal “U.”
Walnut stock has dark wood that shows dings and dents from age and use but no more than usual. There is a slight amount of burn out behind the nipple. Left flat has no cartouche marks. There are no visible cracks however the ramrod channel does have some wear under the nose cap.
Buttplate matches the rest of the metal on the rifle and has a strong “US” on tang. Triggerguard also matches in condition.
Ramrod is correct reproduction with tulip head and swelled shank and is complete with threads on tip. Both sling swivels are present. [ad]
