An original Springfield Model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber musket in nice condition. The metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned and are bright.
Barrel surface wears a pleasing mild sheen with very small amounts of scattered mottling. Bolster area has light pitting. Proofmarks “V / P” and eaglehead are crisp on the breech as is the date “1847” stamped on the barrel tang. Musket also retains its blade front sight on the upper barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore is dark with small amounts of dirt.
Lock has a crisp spreadwinged Eagle over small “US” forward of the hammer and an equally crisp “SPRING / FIELD / 1847” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple is original. Mechanics are strong and crisp and work properly.
Black walnut stock is in good original condition. Wood has never been cleaned or sanded and exhibits just a few light dings and dents along with some minor old gauges. There are several carvings in the wood. Between the triggerguard and the lock are the initials “F.C.W.” Lightly carved on the right side of the forestock between the noseband and second band is “N M M.” Also, the right side of the butt has the carved number “425.” There are no cartouche marks visible.
There is a crisp “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with flat head and threaded tip that is slightly worn. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Screw heads show light wear.
A good representative of the M1842 musket. [ad]
