Item Code: 934-18

This imported longarm is an Austrian Model 1842 .70 caliber, rifled, single-shot muzzleloader. Weapon measures a total length of 57½” with a 42½” long barrel and is a ‘cone in the barrel’ conversion from flint to percussion.

Barrel is secured to the stock by three iron bands with the upper band being a double-strapped type with the integral front sight. Bands bear maker stampings and are secured via springs that are flat on the bottom matching the flattened forend of the stock. Rear sight is a simple notched lug on the breech plug-tang. Bayonet lug and Laukart locking system is present under muzzle. Barrel surface is mottled throughout with some pitting at breech. Bore has good rifling but needs scrubbed. It also has some light pitting.

The iron lockplate surface matches the barrel and bears light, scattered pitting. Lockplate is raised at the curved tail and at the front and exhibits no markings. These were likely obliterated due the soft metal. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Original nipple is present on a raised bolster.

The attractive stock is made of semi-hard whitewood that features pronounced and distinctive graining effects. Wood feels slightly dry. But bears no visible repairs or cracks. Underside of butt shows some wear in the form of minor splits in the grain. Stock has no raised cheek-piece as often found with the early specimens. Escutcheon is present as are lock screws which are in good condition. Iron triggerguard matches the rest of the iron with light pitting and mottling. Buttplate matches also but does exhibit light rust spots.

The two swivels are attached to the triggerguard and to the middle band.

Original ramrod is present.

Several parts bear production numbers.

With the musket is an original bayonet with 4 edges and socket that fits the weapon perfectly. Iron on the bayonet matches the weapon. The two seem to have been together for a long time.  [ad]
