An original Harper’s Ferry Model 1842 smoothbore .69 caliber musket in very nice condition. The metal surfaces have been lightly cleaned and are bright.
Barrel surface is as described above and wears a pleasing mild sheen with very small amounts of scattered mottling. Bolster area is free of pitting. Proofmarks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are crisp on the breech as is the date “1848” stamped on the barrel tang. Barrel also exhibits the small Harper’s Ferry mark “A R / P” forward of the proofmarks. Musket also retains its blade front sight on the upper barrel band. Bayonet lug is present below the muzzle. Bore is clean with only very small amounts of light dirt.
Lock has a crisp spreadwinged Eagle over small “US” forward of the hammer and an equally crisp “HARPERS / FERRY / 1848” in a stacked, three-line arrangement back of the hammer. Nipple and hammer screw are original. Mechanics are strong and crisp and work properly.
Black walnut stock is in very good original condition. Wood has never been cleaned or sanded and exhibits just a few light dings. There is one very small closed “V” shaped crack in the right angle formed by the barrel breech and the barrel tang on the left side of the stock. All the wood lines along the barrel and the raised flat opposite the stock are good. A strong inspector’s cartouche is visible in the apex of the stock flat. Ramrod channel has one minor dent.
There is a crisp “US” stamped on the butt plate tang. Musket retains its original trumpet type steel ramrod with flat head and threaded tip. Both sling swivels are present. Triggerguard and barrel bands match the rest of the metal. Screw heads are excellent.
A good representative of the M1842 Harper’s Ferry rifled musket. [AD]
