Model 1842, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition. The barrel is smoothbore. Bore is clean. No rear sight. Nice viewer’s proof with eagle head on breech. “N.J” stamped on left flat of barrel. The breech plug tang features the year “1848”. The original ramrod is present and is complete with the threads. The hammer and lockplate are in nice condition. The US and eagle are stamped in front of the hammer and exhibit some wear. “SPRING / FIELD / 1846” is stamped boldly behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate shows light pitting and is stamped “US”. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, nose cap, and swivels are present and in good condition. Several of the pieces bear small letter inspector stamps. All gun metal is a light gray color with areas of tarnishing and light speckling/surface rust.
The walnut stock is in good condition with only minor dings and dents; some small (old) chips missing along edges of the ramrod channel just behind the nose band and a small (old) chip from in front of lockplate. Oval inspector cartouche is located on the flat opposite the lockplate as is a script “NJ” surcharge. A few initials are carved into the right side of the shoulder stock. Gunstock is solid with original color and finish.
Accompanying bayonet fits the musket perfectly. The bayonet is in very good condition, stamped “US” and with working locking ring. Clean metal with scattered dark mottling.
This is a very good untouched example of an 1842 smoothbore musket complete with bayonet. [jet]
