Original Remington military long arm produced circa 1867-1888 with the unique ‘rolling block’ configuration and action. The ‘rolling block’ rifle employed an interlocking system of hammer and breech that was deemed one of the strongest actions of its time. Not a popular long arm to the U.S military at the time, the governor of New York State contracted for an initial 15,000 units with the maker for NYS militia use.
Chambered for a rimfire 50/70 caliber round, the rifle exhibits the large action with a high spur hammer and a projecting ear-like lever on the right side of breech block. The 36” round barrel is secured to the black walnut stock via three barrel bands with barrel retaining springs. A long-range, full folding rear sight rests atop the barrel breech. Barrel shows no original colors. Does exhibit small scattered spots of fine surface pitting. Bore is clean with good rifling. Remington markings and patent dates appear in two lines on tang behind hammer. Patent number and date also appear in two lines on trigger guard backstrap. Stock has its original finish and shows some dings, dents and wear from age and use (especially along ramrod channel). Stock is in solid with no cracks or repairs. Three cartouches visible on the shoulder stock. “D 10” boldly stamped on the left side of shoulder stock behind frame. “10 / D / 38” is stamped on the buttplate tang.
All gunmetal shows matching patina; light gray to plum brown. Various other small inspector markings seen on this rifle. Mechanics are strong. Rifle has complete rear sight, both swivels and the original ramrod with its ribbed, slotted body and threaded tip.
Accompanying socket bayonet fits the weapon perfectly. It bears no markings, has locking ring, and is in slightly cleaner condition than rifle.
This is a very nice Rolling Block rifle in 50-70 caliber complete with bayonet. [jet]
