Item Code: 362-453

Model 1816, .69 caliber smoothbore musket manufactured at Springfield, Mass. Dated 1828 and converted to percussion. The barrel is a full 42” in length and in overall nice smooth condition except around the breech end where there is heavy pitting around the nipple. The original button head ramrod is present although the threads are worn off. Barrel proof markings are not visible at the breech due to the pitting. No date is visible on the breech tang. The hammer and lockplate show similar wear as the barrel. The US and eagle stamped in front of the hammer are about half worn away while the “SPRING / FIELD / 1828” are still strongly stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are strong. Butt plate shows moderate pitting, stamped “US” with the “S” mostly worn away. All other metal parts: barrel bands, band springs, trigger guard, nose cap, and swivels are present and in good condition. Several of the pieces bear small letter inspector stamps. Gun metal appears to have been browned.

The walnut stock is in good condition with only minor dings and dents; typical wear along edges of the ramrod channel. Two oval inspector cartouches are located on the stock, on the flat opposite the lockplate. The varnish has been rubbed off over one cartouche, presumably to view it better. A ¼” number “1” is stamped into the left cheek of the butt stock. Gunstock is solid.

There are two sets of numbers etched into the underside of the gun, possibly an inventory number from an old collection. One set appears in the stock in front of the trigger guard and another is etched into the underside of the barrel at the muzzle.

This is a good example of an 1816 flintlock musket that was converted to percussion and definitely saw some use.   [jet]
