This weapon presents an overall well used appearance. The barrel is heavily mottled and in places it is turning a plumb brown color. There is some light surface pitting especially in the area of the breech. The front sight is present at the muzzle and the blued rear sight has the single flip-up leaf. Sight has a build-up of dirt and gun oil under the leaf and around the base. Left flat of the breech appears to have no proof marks but with a loop the letter “P” and part of the eaglehead can be seen. Barrel date is gone and that area has moderate pitting. The eagle on the bolster is faint. Nipple is original and is solid but has a build-up of dirt and oil around it and there is also some light surface rust. Bore is dark and dirty with no rifling visible.
The lockplate and hammer have a mottled gray appearance with a strong stamping of a spreadwinged eagle and “US” over “SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer while behind it is “1864.” The strength of these stampings is somewhat muted by the mottling and some minor surface pitting. Action is crisp and works properly.
The wood stock is in good used condition with the usual dings and dents. There is one closed crack running between the forward tang of the triggerguard and the lockplate. The flat opposite the lock has two faint inspector’s cartouches and of the two lock screws in this area one shows wear. Also in this area is an inlaid brass 19th Corps badge that meas. approx. 0.75 x 0.75 inches. Iron buttplate is pitted but still has a clearly stamped “US” on the tang. Both sling swivels are present. All three barrel bands are held in place by band springs.
The original straight shanked tulip head ramrod is present and complete with threaded tip.
As stated above, this weapon has the appearance of being a veteran of heavy use that was then oiled and put away. The build-up of oil around the rear sight, nipple and barrel bands can be cleaned off for a better look. The inlaid Corps badge and the 1864 date makes one wonder if this weapon saw action in Sheridan’s Valley Campaign.
