The lockplate surface wears a coat of old brown rust and oxidation. Plate exhibits standard maker markings of “SPRING / FIELD / 1844” behind the hammer. The “eagle motif / US” front of the hammer is rusted away and not visible at all. Hammer is also rusted. Mechanics are still strong and crisp. Lockplate screws not buggered up. Traces of the proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are visible on left side of breech. No trace of the barrel breech tang date stamp remains. Bore is dark, dusty with pitting. No rear sight as usual with the front sight on upper double band. Small bayo lug underneath muzzle tip. Side plate is rusted brown.
Black walnut stock surface is dark and uncleaned with numerous light and deep scratches, scuff marks overall. No cartouche visible on the left flat. One slight surface crack, 3½” long, on stock at ride side near middle band. No cracks of splits. Stock tang area missing a large sliver of wood to right and left side of barrel tang. Longarm retains both swivels, at middle band and at bow of triggerguard. Musket has its original trumpet head-style ramrod. Threaded tip broken off and the ramrod length has been shortened.
