In 1842, the need for more modern percussion ignition systems on US military arms signaled the end of the flintlock longarm and started the age of the cap and ball muzzleloader firearm.
This original weapon is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842 muzzleloader with a rifled bore in very good condition. The lock plate surface has been cleaned and exhibits a pleasing light gray coloring with scattered pinprick pitting. Lock plate markings are the standard “Eagle / US” in front of the hammer and “SPRING / FIELD / 1850” behind the hammer. Stampings are clear and sharp. No barrel breech tang date. Clear proof marks of “V / P / eaglehead” on left side of breech. Buttplate stamped “US”.
Entire barrel surface has been cleaned and wears a light gray sheen. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Rifled bore is very good with light pitting in spots but should clean up to bright. All the other iron components are consistent. No cartouche visible. Black walnut stock has been lightly cleaned and retains some of its original feathering. No cracks, splits or other blemishes visible. Longarm has both swivels. Ramrod is a reproduction piece as is the long range rear sight.
A very nice representative of a rifled ’42 Springfield. [ra]
