This original longarm is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842, single-shot, smoothbore muzzleloader in good overall condition but has been cleaned.
The lockplate surface is semi-bright as is the barrel. Plate exhibits standard maker markings of “SPRING / FIELD / 1852” behind the hammer. The “eagle motif / US” front of the hammer is strong. Mechanics are still strong and crisp. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are visible on left side of breech. Barrel breech date stamp of “1852” is readable. Barrel pitted at breech and bolster. Original nipple present. Bore is mostly clean with some pitting. No rear sight as usual. The front sight is attached to the upper double band. Bayonet lug underneath muzzle. Side plate matches lock in color. Screw heads good.
Black walnut stock surface is dark and uncleaned with numerous scratches, scuff marks overall. No cartouche visible on the left flat. No visible cracks. Left side of cheek has carved letter “A” and the initials “P.B.H.” Longarm retains both swivels, at middle band and at bow of triggerguard. All barrel bands are present. Musket has its original trumpet head-style ramrod. Threaded tip is good.
