This is a nice, honest example of a US Model 1861 Rifle Musket manufactured by Springfield Armory with a .58 caliber percussion. The lock is marked “U.S./ Springfield” with wingspread eagle forward of hammer and it’s dated 1862 behind hammer. The barrel is also dated “1862” with correct double struck “VP/Eagle.” All metal is smooth with light gray patina. VF+ bore. Walnut stock shows signs of use with scattered scratches. A pair of correct inspector’s cartouches is visible. The rifle is mechanically perfect. This is a very desirable Civil War firearm that is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. [SS]
