This original Model 1861 U.S. Percussion Rifle-Musket is in very good condition overall. Made by the Springfield Armory, circa 1861-1862, a total of over 265,000 units were produced in those years.
A .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader dated 1862, this longarm is in very good condition overall. Barrel has a bright surface area with very light mottling and no pitting to speak of. Breech date is strongly stamped “1862”as is the “VP” and eaglehead marks. Above the proof marks on the left side of the barrel is a small area of crosshatching. Weapon also retains the original two-leaf rear sight. Lockplate is nicely stamped with a spreadwinged eagle and “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD” motif in front of the hammer and a strong, sharp “1862” date stamped behind the hammer. Mechanics are good. Bore is clean with only light dirt and will clean up to bright. Rifling is very good.
Black walnut stock in very good condition overall with just normal dings, nicks and scratches from age and use. There is a short hairline crack that runs diagonally from barrel breech to barrel tang. Flat opposite the hammer has one faint inspector’s cartouche. This area also has a letter “M” done with brown paint or inlay. There is a similar letter “X” on the left side of the butt. The weapon has the original tulip-head, swelled shank, steel ramrod with threads at opposite end that are good.
Musket is complete and retains its original iron nose cap, iron nipple and bolster screw, barrel bands, sling swivels, and buttplate.
A very attractive example of the standard Civil War infantry weapon. [ad]
