This is a nice example of a Remington 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle, otherwise known as a “Zouave Rifle.” The total quantity of this type of rifle made was 12,501. The rifle is a .58 caliber, single shot muzzleloader with a 33” round barrel fastened by two barrel bands. There is a large lug on right side of the barrel near the muzzle for attaching a saber bayonet. The rifle has a small brass patchbox and brass butt plate. The barrel retains nearly 100% of its original blued finish. The lock is marked “Remington’s / Ilion, N.Y.” with wingspread eagle over “US” forward of hammer. It is dated 1863 behind hammer. The lock retains approximately 75% of its original case coloring with some fading. The walnut stock has a pair of VGT cartouches. The barrel is dated 1863 with VP Eagle at breech. Also marked “STEEL/ RK. A.” along barrel side flat. Bore is absolutely mirror bright. This rifle is mechanically perfect. [ss]
