This artifact is a muzzle loading, single shot, flintlock firearm that was never altered to percussion. Likely used by one of the New England militia units of the period, the longarm features a large .70 to .75 caliber with a smoothbore barrel.
The musket measures a total of 56” long with a 41” long round, tapered barrel. Bore is dirty with pitting and oxidation. The full, maple stock measures 53” long and is secured to the barrel via three brass barrel bands and three iron springs. Shoulder stock has a distinct, sharp pointed, 9” long comb. Stock along the barrel tang has been lightly carved. All furniture mountings are brass which include the butt plate, triggerguard, and sideplate. Buttplate tang has a finial style tip. Sling swivels are missing at the trigger bow and the second band. Stock wears a mellow patina over most of the wood.
Rear of stock at butt appears to have been lightly stripped and reveals major surface cracks on both faces. No patch box. Stock flat edges are rounded and a large 1¼” long sliver of wood is missing at the tang. Original lockplate is 5½” long, almost flush to the stock with a teat at the left edge and a slight rise on the right side. Plate exhibits no maker’s name and the hammer is flat sided and shows no marks Mechanics are good. The long barrel wears a dark gray patina with mottled salt and pepper rust pitting its entire overall surface. A small brass front sight is fit into barrel 1½” from muzzle tip. Musket has no ramrod. A nice New England militia flintlock musket.
