Item Code: 490-576

This original weapon is a .69 caliber Springfield Model 1842, single-shot, smoothbore muzzleloader in good condition. All gun metal has been heavily cleaned to a pleasing, light gray sheen. Lockplate surface is bright and exhibits just very light scattered rust pitting. Lock markings include the “Eagle / US” motif in front of hammer and “SPRING / FIELD / 1849” behind hammer. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” are clear. “1844” stamped on the barrel tang is strong. Bore is clean and semi-bright. All the other iron components are consistent. Two government cartouches are clear and visible on the flat. “U S” stamp on butt plate tang. No other markings visible. Black walnut stock surface is dark and appears to have been refinished. Does show a number of light scratches and scuff marks overall along with minor dings and nicks. A good-looking M1842 U.S. smoothbore musket by Springfield Arsenal.
