Requirements for more a modern percussion ignition systems on US military arms signaled the end of the flintlock age in 1842 and started the age of the cap and ball muzzleloader firearm. This longarm, in very good overall condition, is an original .69 caliber Model 1842 Harpers Ferry smoothbore muzzleloader made by the same named arsenal.
All gunmetal surface areas have been lightly cleaned and exhibit a salt and pepper coloring overall blended with light scattered areas of rust pitting. Hammer shows moderate pitting at upper area. Lock markings are the standard, small “Eagle / US” in front of the hammer with stamping clear. Back of hammer shows a three-line horizontal stamping “HARPERS / FERRY / 1852” in good clear markings. Mechanics are tight and crisp. Retains all proof marks of “V / P / eaglehead” lightly worn down but visible on the barrel. Also retains the unique, very small Harpers Ferry proof stamping “P B / P” clearly visible on the left side of breech area.
Barrel’s left facet has a single sub-inspector mark while the barrel tang shows the worn but visible date “1852.” Bore shows light to moderate scattered pitting and should clean to semi-bright. No cartouches visible on stock. Black walnut stock appears to have been very lightly cleaned at one time. Stock also marked with what appears to be a single, small letter ‘S’ on left flat along with its share of scattered dings and nicks. Both swivel slings present as is the original ramrod with its trumpet-shaped tip and threaded tip, also cleaned. A very nice representative ’42 Harper’s Ferry smoothbore musket.
