This is a Springfield manufactured muzzleloader that has been converted to a breechloader using the Erskin S. Allin design. The conversion was completed at the Springfield Armory. The 58-caliber bore was changed to a 50-caliber centerfire by lining the barrel. The breech was also converted to the distinctive ‘trapdoor” breechblock. Finishes were the same as the model 1863 muskets. Lockplate markings are an Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date 1863 or 1864. Also the breech is marked with an “Eagle” over ‘1866”. Springfield altered 25,000 of these muskets.
Some of these rifles were made with a shorter 36” barrel. These are considered scarce. This rifle, dated 1864, has a nice dull dusky gun metal patina on all the iron parts. Crisp working mechanism. The ramrod is original. Bore has very good rifling and a nice very bright finish. The stock is a lightly sanded and has some nicks and scratches from normal use. The three inspector’s cartouches located on the opposite side of the lockplate are visible. Bore is bright with good rifling. This is a nice example of a rare Allin converted Springfield.
