This example is dated the second year of production, 1862. on both the lock plate and breech. The barrel length measures a full 40” and retains its front sight/bayonet lug and rear leaf sight as well. Lock action is very crisp on half cock as well as on full cock position. All other metal components - butt plate, trigger guard, lock plate & hammer, barrel bands & springs, nose cap & ramrod - exhibit a bright grayish appearance with slight amounts of surface pitting located on the barrel between the third and second barrel band and around the bayonet lug. Pitting is also present on the surface of the third barrel band and trigger guard, nose cap and ramrod.
The walnut stock has a medium-dark appearance with some overall scratches and shallow dents, mostly located on the butt surface area. There are no cracks or fissures to this stock. Two inspector’s cartouches are visible stamped into the wood on the flat area opposite the lock. The wood to metal fittings are still tight around the lock mortis and down the barrel.
The .58 caliber three lands and three grooves rifling is strong and clean.
A nice early war dated specimen!
