The Musketoon was made by Springfield from 1848 to 1849. They only manufactured approximately 6700. They are .69 caliber smoothbore muzzleloaders. Barrel is 26 inches in length with two brass barrel bands. Buttplate is also brass with the U.S. on the tang. Lockplate markings are the eagle motif over U.S forward of the hammer and behind the hammer vertically is SPRING/FIELD over the date. Stocks are almost full length made from walnut. Button head ramrod is fastened with iron swivels.
Offered is a cavalry Musketoon dated 1853. All iron parts have a dark brown attic patina throughout. Area around the nipple is pitted as most of them all are. Lockplate is mechanically sound with sharp markings. Bore is dark with some pitting. All brass has an untouched patina. Wood is good except for around the nipple. This is a nice example of an original untouched weapon used by the cavalry.
