Cal. .58 “Springfield” produced at Springfield Armory. The lock surface is a gunmetal gray with peppered black age spots. Markings “Eagle” on the primer compartment and” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date “1857” are faint but visible. Crisp working lockwork. All other iron surfaces are also gunmetal gray with peppered black age spots throughout. The barrel markings are VP over an eagle are very faint and no date. The rear sight is complete and functional. The ramrod is original. Primer compartment latch does not latch. Bore is dark and smooth. The stock is very dark in color and has some nicks and gouges. No inspector’s cartouche. Original sling is in two pieces. The Model ‘55” Springfield was heavily used during the Civil War. It was the first U S arm to fire the Minie ball in 58 calibers. Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories produced 59,273 Model 55’s between 1857 and 1861.
