Model 1861, .58 caliber, percussion rifle-musket dated 1861 in complete, very good condition produced by the Federal armory in Springfield, Mass. Musket retains its original stock, original iron nipple and bolster screw, swell-shaped ramrod, both barrel bands and swivel sling hooks. The 40” long barrel surface exhibits mottled areas of dark oxidation with moderate pitting near the bolster and breech. Lockplate, hammer, buttplate, bands, triggerguard, rear sight, and ramrod all have a hard rusted surface that exhibits pitting. All gun metal has been cleaned and shows a mottled dark coloration overall. Lock plate stamped “SPRINGFIELD” in front of the hammer and “1861” behind hammer. Just traces of eagle motif on plate. All screws very good save the buggered up bolster screw. Date stamp on the top flat has pitted away. Government proofmarks near breech worn away. Mechanics are crisp. Black walnut stock, in good condition overall, has been lightly cleaned and shows rounded edges. No cartouche is visible on the flat opposite the hammer. No cracks in the wood. Some light dings and dents visible on the stock. Swelled shank steel ramrod with its tulip-head and threaded tip in very good condition.
