CIVIL WAR THREE-SCREW COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER

$1,595.00 SOLD

Item Code: 30-1720

This cap and ball percussion sidearm is a Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good overall condition. These weapons were in production from 1860 through 1873 and were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Colt Army revolver was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict. This sidearm is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and the early 8” long barrel. All gunmetal components have been heavily cleaned and exhibit a pleasing light gray finish with scattered rust pitting overall.

Revolver has matching numbers #151130 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, cylinder, wedge and on the spline, as well as on the brass trigger guard and steel backstrap as normal. Serial # dates the manufacture in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 1862. This martial weapon is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and a small notch in the backstop. Mechanics are sloppy, exhibit weak indexing and could use adjustment. Barrel address is on the thin side and reads “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW YORK U S AMERICA”. Traces of the cylinder scene remain visible as most has been worn or cleaned away. “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side of the frame is visible and has been double stamped. All nipples are intact, no chips. Safeties all hammered down.

Frame and triggerguard show sub-inspector stampings. Stamped with “44 CAL” on left rear of triggerguard. Triggerguard also has a replacement screw and the numeral “3” stamped on the guard. These Colt armies with the 44 CAL stamping likely started life for the civilian trade but were pulled out to meet military demands and given a rebated cylinder and recoil cutouts. Original grips are one-piece varnished walnut in very good condition and exhibit no government inspector’s cartouches. Screws slightly buggered. Loading lever was broken off and exhibits a major repair to make functional.
