This pleasing martial sidearm is a government contract Model 1836 single-shot flintlock pistol in very good overall condition. The firm of Asa Waters of Millbury, Mass. and Robert Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut produced 41,000 such pistols from 1836 through 1844. This 14” long flintlock pistol is a .54 caliber smoothbore muzzleloader that has never been altered to percussion. that has an 8½” round barrel with a dusty bore with very light pitting. Barrel, with its brass blade front sight and an oval shaped rear sight on tang, has no original finish. Barrel wears a mottled satin scheen with scattered pitting overall as does all iron the furniture and mountings.

Lockplate slightly convex and flush at the rear with beveled edges forward of the hammer. Maker name on the lockplate is visible but is thin. Below the pan is stamped with “eaglehead / A. WATERS / MILLBURY, MS. / 1837” in front of the hammer. Visible on the lockplate beneath the frizzen spring is stamped the strong inspector’s initials “W. D.” All external flint parts are original and strong, save for the jaw screw which exhibits heavily stripped threads. Jaw and screw are present. Stamped on the upper barrel at the breech is the government mark “JA”. Other inspector marks found on various parts of the pistol. Barrel band has a strap extension that joins the sideplate.

A beautiful, dark black walnut stock exhibits a pleasing patina and features two prominent inspector’s cartouches on the flat opposite the hammer. Stock shows no cracks, chips or blemishes. Stock never cleaned. The reinforced hammer /cock is case hardened. Has no flint in its jaws. Brass flash pan is detachable and angles upward at the rear. The frizzen spring remains strong and tight. Mechanics strong and crisp. Small trigger. Trigger guard riveted to the plate. Round buttcap displays a long narrow tang that forms the rear strap of the grip. Pistol has a steel swivel-type button-head ramrod. This single-shot, martial-marked M1836 flintlock pistol by Asa Waters is a fine specimen.
