Presented here is a fine, cap and ball percussion sidearm manufactured by the Manhattan Firearms Company of Newark, New Jersey. A handsome and complete specimen, this identified revolver is a Manhattan Series “II”, .36 caliber model revolver designated the ‘Navy Type’. In very good overall condition, this sidearm has a three-screw frame and bears close resemblance to the Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver. It has an unrebated, five-paneled roll-engraved cylinder mated to the seldom seen 6.5” long octagonal barrel. A total quantity of 78,000 of Manhattan Navy pocket handguns were produced in Newark from the late 1850’s through the late 1860s. The five-shot cylinder retains a very good original roll engraved scene, a clear Dec 27, 1859 patent date stamping, as well as its complement of twelve safety notches at the back of the cylinder. In mechanically tight and crisp condition, the revolver features a dark gray finish overall.
The solid revolver bears matching serial numbers of “12608” on the cylinder, barrel, wedge, frame, triggerguard, and buttstrap. All nipples are in excellent condition. No case colors remain on the frame, hammer or loading lever. The smooth, dark one-piece wood grips are of varnished walnut and are in excellent condition. This Series “II” barrel address marking has the one line “MANHATTAN FIRE ARMS MFG. CO. NEW YORK” clearly stamped on the top facet. Exterior surface shows scattered light pitting and average wear all consistent with this weapon’s age and use. Screws are in fair to good condition with some buggering. The Manhattan sidearm has a brass trigger guard and the brass backstrap. This good-looking Manhattan .36 caliber ‘Navy Type’ model revolver is a fine specimen that would make a great addition to any collection of military secondary sidearms.
