This antique pistol, from the late 1700s / early 1800s, is an original .61 caliber, single-shot, flintlock pistol often referred to as English side pistol. The specimen is in very good overall condition and is marked with the maker’s stamp “Ryan & Watson” of London, England. Fine looking, smoothbore muzzleloader is 13” long and has a huge .61 caliber charge with an 8” partial octagonal / round brass barrel fitted with brass furniture. Weapon is not a re-conversion. The flat, dark gray to brown colored steel lockplate is contoured behind the rounded hammer and marked with “Ryan & Watson” in front of the hammer. Two small British proof marks are visible on the upper left facet at the barrel breech and “London” carved on top facet. Lockplate, pan, frizzen and frizzen spring all intact but mechanics need adjustment. Flint is missing.
The full walnut stock is in very good condition and shows rounded contours with a number of dings and dents but no cracks and chips. Original varnish bears scuffing in areas but pistol appears not to have been cleaned. No cartouches. No brass butt cap. Brass triggerguard has a decorative pineapple finial design on bottom of guard. No side plate but the screws have brass washers, one with a recessed oval support. Pistol retains its brass-head wooden ramrod secured in the stock channel below the barrel with barrel tubes. All screws are in good condition.
A fine single-shot English pistol from the early 1800s, this sidearm would make a handsome addition to any antique pistol collection.
