Presented here is a classic Colt cap and ball pistol commonly referred to as the 1849 Pocket Model Revolver. This personal sidearm, in fair original condition throughout, bears all matching serial numbers of # 229007 indicating a production year of 1^st quarter 1863. Gunmetal has lost its original finish and casehardening over the years along with its rust from cleaning. Revolver is mechanically deficient and does not index. Needs work. Grips are of one-piece, varnished walnut, strong and tight, and bear no trace of shrinkage or blemishes. Grip straps and the small, oval trigger guard are brass as well as the backstrap. No silver plate. Specimen features a standard 4” long barrel matched to a .31 caliber, five-shot, unrebated cylinder. Has remnants of the ‘stagecoach holdup’ scene. Wedge appears frozen in place. All visible serial numbers match. A thin “ADDRESS SAML COLT / NEW YORK CITY” the top of the barrel. The standard “COLTS / PATENT” is lightly stamped on the left side of the frame. Called the successor to the Baby Dragoon, the Model 1849 Pocket was a small version of the Model 1851 Navy revolver and proved ever popular through its end of production in 1873. This original Pocket Revolver is a classic Colt percussion firearm at a reasonable price.
