$3,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 31-1491

Here is a fine condition, early production, American revolver by Colt, often called the “Peacemaker” aka the “Frontier Six Shooter”.  This type of sidearm was adopted by the US Ordnance Department in 1873 as its standard Cavalry pistol, and government contracts totaled some 37,063 over the years 1873 to 1891. This early production specimen is the popular solid-frame, single action revolver with a six-shot fluted cylinder, 7½” long round barrel, .44.40 caliber centerfire.

Sidearm has the doughnut or ‘bulls eye’ round ejector head, loading gate, cylinder pin retaining screw, and oil-stained walnut one-piece grips. Wood grips shows slight shrinkage at both inside corners, normal. No cartouche visible.  Sidearm bears serial number 96687 and Colt records indicate that it was produced in 1883.  All matching serial #s on barrel, frame, buttstrap and cylinder.  Cylinder bears the last four serial numbers “6687”. Assembly # 4763 visible on loading gate.   Finish was standard blued but the existing finish has turned to a pleasing medium gray patina with light peppery pitting on all metal.  No case colors remain.  All other metal has color consistent with age and use. The one-line barrel address markings read “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. Co.  HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” in clear block lettering.   Three line patent dates on left side of frame read “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871 / PAT JULY 2, 72, PAT JAN. 19, 75.” Mechanics are crisp and strong.  Bottom of barrel near frame is stamped ‘44’ and muzzle shows evidence of holster wear.  Triggerguard shows “44 C. F” on the left face.

A handsome and powerful sidearm, this 44.40 cal Colt S.A.A. revolver was such a superiorweapon that Colt’s dealer, B. Kittredge & Co, remarked: It (Colt Revolver) is confidently recommended to officers of the Army and Navy, guides, hunters and all who travel among dangerous communities, as the best weapon to carry on the person that has ever been produced.”
