COLT MODEL 1878 ‘FRONTIER’ DOUBLE-ACTION REVOLVER

This original, double-action, .44 caliber, six shot revolver was made by the Colt’s Manufacturing Company in Hartford, Connecticut.  This large frame sidearm comes with Colt factory archives letter that indicate the Colt D. A. revolver was shipped to the Simmons Hardware Company in St. Louis, Missouri on February 4, 1894 as one of two guns in the shipment.

This hefty weapon has a six shot cylinder matched to a 4¾” long round barrel with ejector rod. Top of barrel has a two-line address marking of “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. / HARTFORD CT.  U.S.A.” while left side of barrel reads “COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER” in 1/8” high block letters. Sidearm bears serial# 33169 and measures a total of 9½” long.  Revolver displays a two-piece set of black hard rubber grips that feature profuse factory checkering with the integral oval rampant Colt embossed motif. Revolver finish is blued and retains old traces of such on frame, barrel, trigger, and ejector.

Buttstrap integral with the frame and retains its standard lanyard swivel ring hole and swivel attached. Serial# on buttstrap. Triggerguard separate and screws out. Bore is superb. All metal has moderately been cleaned and wears a dusky gray sheen overall. Scant spots of age oxidation are visible on the barrel and cylinder. Cylinder# matching. Assembly numbers found on various components. Original frame screws clean and sharp. Mechanics are crisp and strong. This is a fine, original standard Model 1878 Colt Double Action revolver.
