The 1861 Colt Navy is a .36 caliber, 6 shot cylinder with a 7 1/2 inch round barrel and an attached loading lever. It was manufactured between 1861 and 1873. Serial numbers began at number 1 and ended around number 38,843 with numbers below 28,000 considered Civil War era. The barrel markings are ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA and the left side of the frame is marked COLTS / PATENT and 36 CAL on the trigger guard. The cylinder also had a roll engraved scene of a battle between the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy and is also marked COLTS PATENT and the serial number. The grip straps were made of brass and plated in silver. The grips were one piece of varnished walnut. Colt stamped the serial number on the frame, trigger guard, backstrap, and barrel lug. The last four or five numbers are stamped on the cylinder, wedge, cylinder pin and written in the backstrap cut of the grips.
Offered is serial number 1117, manufactured in 1861. All the serial numbers match including the wedge. Medal is a dusky gray brown finish. Faint traces of the cylinder scene are visible. Barrel address is strong. No silver finish remains and no cartouche is visible on the grips. Action is tight and functions perfectly. Great bore with strong rifling. Just a nice all around untouched example of a “61” Navy.
