Offered here is one of Thomas Bacon’s classic designs, the 2nd Model Pocket Revolver.

These guns were inspired by the Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver and at least some of the design work was done by Bacon and other inventors during his year at the Manhattan Firearms Company. Like the Colt it was a single action percussion pocket revolver with a .31 caliber bore and a five chambered cylinder. The most important feature of the Bacon Pocket Revolvers was the removable side plate on the left side of the frame, which theoretically made it easier to work on the guns if they needed repair.

This is a nice example of a 2nd Model Bacon Percussion Pocket Revolver with a 5” barrel and is serial, or “assembly” numbered, 108. The matching number appears on the left side of the frame under the grips, under the barrel, on the rear face of the cylinder, on the wedge, on the loading lever, inside the trigger guard and on the face of the loading lever catch. The round barrel is roll marked in a single line, “BACON MF’G. CO. NORWICH, CONN” with loss of the top edge of the stamp. A notch in the hammer nose is the rear sight and a brass pin the front sight. The barrel retains some of the original bright blue, the balance of the barrel is a smoky bluish-brown patina that shows some scattered oxidized peppering. The bore is clean and clear with good rifling and only some scattered oxidation.

The five-shot, fluted cylinder shares the same color and condition. Original nipples are good and this gun features “flats” between the nipples as safe hammer rests.

The loading lever features a “button” loading lever catch which still works well. Frame is not engraved as many others were and has the same scattered peppering as other parts of the gun. The revolver is mechanically strong and indexes well with no wobble in any part of the piece.

One small screw is missing from the trigger guard strap on the front side of the grip. The wood grips themselves remain in nice condition and retain their original varnish rich color with only scattered handling marks and minor mars.

This is an attractive and all matching example of a less commonly seen pocket revolver of the mid-1860s. [jet][ph:L]
