Presented here is a Second Model specimen of an original Colt 1851 Navy ‘London’ revolver in complete but fair condition. Colt designated the term ‘Navy’ to imply the caliber (.36) of the weapon, as he did with its later and heavier companion the Colt Model 1860 Army of .44 caliber. All London-made revolvers were produced between 1853 through 1857. These weapons also have distinct British proof marks and their own known production numbers are about 42,000 with a serial range of 1 though 42,000.

Manufactured 1857, this hard-used Model 1851 London Navy revolver wears a semi-dusky gray sheen and appears to have been heavily cleaned. All gunmetal carries scattered areas of dark rust oxidation on the barrel, frame, loading lever, cylinder and on the large triggerguard. Sidearm has all matching serial numbers including the cylinder, wedge and loading lever. Sidearm bears serial number #42132 and is an example of a personal sidearm used before and during the American Civil War. Weapon features an un-rebated cylinder mated to a 7½” long octagonal barrel. Exhibits fair mechanics. No scene on the cylinder. All nipples are in intact and the cylinder safety pins are all hammered down. No original colors remain on the three-screw frame which features a clear “COLTS / PATENT” stamping on the left side. Frame screws are slightly buggered and the wedge screw is missing.

The worn and smooth-edged octagonal barrel with attached loading lever exhibits no traces of the original bluing and instead wears a dark mottled surface of rust oxidation. Barrel address marking “ADDRESS. COL: COLT. LONDON” is worn away save for a thin visible marking of the words ‘COLT. LONDON’. Top flat of the barrel features a distinct, narrow, 1½” long section that appears to have been filled with brass and smoothed over. The smooth surfaced varnished grips are one-piece walnut and in good overall condition with no cartouches. No silver wash on the large rounded brass trigger guard. A reasonable priced, complete Colt Model 1851 Navy London revolver for your display.  [ra][ph:L]
