Cooper began making guns in Pittsburgh from circa 1850s-1864 then moved to Philadelphia and made guns there from 1864-69, approximately 15,000 of all models.
This is the “Second model” as made in Philadelphia. The top flat of the octagonal 4” barrel is stamped, “COOPER FIRE ARMS MFG CO. FRANKFORD PHILA. PA. / PAT. JAN 7, 1851 APR. 25, 1854 SEPT. 4, 1860 / SEPT. 1, 1863 SEPT. 22, 1863”. Much of the lower two lines are difficult to read amid pitting and dark metal tone. Bore is clear with good rifling and would benefit from having an oiled rag run through. This portion of the gun shows pitting and light wear with an overall dark mottled appearance.
Five-shot round cylinder. Double action mechanism works very well. Nipples remain in good shape, safety “cutouts” in between retain good edges. Frame is in fine condition. Cylinder and frame show light wear but remain cleaner than the barrel and display an even light gray tone.
Trigger guard and back straps are brass with a one-piece walnut grip. Wood shows usual light wear with some loss of the varnish finish.
Barrel, loading lever, cylinder, frame, cylinder pin, and butt strap are all stamped with matching serial number “2009”. Indexing and all mechanical actions work very well.
A fine double-action revolver. [jet][ph:L]
