Item Code: 2024-1953

The Colt m1862 Police Revolver was a pocket-sized improvement over the m1849 in several areas – namely weight and a larger caliber.  Colt offered multiple barrel lengths for the m1862 Pocket Police and Pocket Navy revolver, and this is one of the popular 4.5” models which offered a balance between concealability and adequate muzzle velocity.  The Colt m1862 was based on the design of the Colt 1860 Army Revolver and became a popular choice of sidearm among officers and soldiers during the Civil War.

With a matching serial number of “19202” on barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap, this .36 caliber revolver was manufactured in mid-1863 according to Colt’s records. The cylinder retains a worn but visible “PAT SEPT 10th 1853” marking, the frame is marked “COLTS PATENT”, and trigger guard is stamped “36 CAL”. Still clearly seen on the top of the barrel is “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Small “S” sub-inspector stamps on most components.

The revolver has seen use with nicks, small dings, and light pitting overall, amid a primarily gray patina. The fluted cylinder has areas of light pitting and shows wear along front edge. Nipples are strong while all safety pins are hammered down. The barrel also shows some light pitting closer to the muzzle. The action is good, holding at half- and full-cock. The cylinder indexes well with only the slightest wobble.  The loading lever operates as intended and locks securely under the barrel. The bore is clean and clear with only very light pitting and decent rifling. The nice walnut grip exhibits a rich red-brown color with no cracks or significant wear.

If your collection is missing one of these attractive Colts that has seen use, this is surely an excellent candidate. [cm/jet][ph:L]
