The Third Model Dragoon numbers stand at ten thousand from 1851 through 1860. This design had more variations as compared to its earlier counterparts. Some of the third model Colt Dragoon Revolvers had frame cuts for detachable shoulder stocks, horizontal loading lever latches and folding leaf sights. Third Colt Dragoon Revolvers had a round trigger guard. Government records showed an order for 8,390 Dragoons.  These quintessential Dragoons stand out from earlier variations with the introduction of a rounded trigger guard and the continuation of the rectangular cylinder stops. With an estimated 1,200 – 1,500 ready to accept one of three types of shoulder stocks, it is more common to find a Third Model such as this with those necessary modifications than previous models.

The stamped serial numbers throughout read “12437” and fully match, making this an 1852 manufactured weapon. No finish remains on the gunmetal surfaces, which shine brightly, and are mostly free of rust.  Some wear, presumably from use or service, is present – including small dings in the recoil shield and very light pitting in localized areas.  The cylinder scene is mostly worn as is the patent marking.  All sub inspector lettering stamps are strong, as is the “COLT’S PATENT U.S.” stamp on the right side of the frame.  The takedown pin screw is missing but no other parts appear to have been changed or altered. The walnut grips are in nice condition with an inspector cartouche on the right grip panel.  The loading lever operates as new, while all brass shines with a bright yellow hue with minimal wear and only minor cosmetic flaws.  The German Silver front sight blade still glistens. Timing is good, lockup is tight, and all mechanics are in a working condition – a testament to Colt quality.  Nipples are in good condition as shown.

This 4lb revolver is sure to be the centerpiece of any Civil War period weapon collection that still needs a 3rd Model Dragoon. With its bright finish, it would display very nicely and, with its manufacturing date, should appeal to a broad range of collectors.    [cm][ph:L]
