According to the base serial number of 66862, this revolver was manufactured in early 1857 and is in the numbered range of the US Navy’s second purchase order for .36 caliber Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolvers.  Many of those purchased featured a “USN” stamp on the strap at the butt of the grip, but this pistol had its trigger guard and grip frame replaced with an original part numbered 105865.

One of the most sought-after pistols in history, the 1851 Navy was used by some of American History’s most notable servicemen, lawmen, outlaws, and exhibitionists.  When loaded to the established standard, the muzzle energy is roughly equivalent in power to a modern .380 Automatic Colt Pistol round. The m51 offered an exceptional balance of modest size and adequate power, which was appreciated across every branch of service - on both sides - during the Civil War.

The weapon features an octagonal, 7½” long barrel with attached loading lever.  Barrel still enjoys sharp edges and holds a very deep and strong maker address marking that reads, “ADDRESS SAM’L COLT NEW YORK CITY.” Mechanics are very tight overall, with strong lockup at half cock and full – a true testament to Colt’s legendary quality.  The grips are in good condition with typical minor wear. No inspectors’ cartouches are noted, except for what may be the top border of one of the once complete stampings on the right grip panel.  Minimal remnants of the original finish remain and have blended with a light gray patina to give this pistol a striking, period look. Some of the traditional naval scene is visible on the cylinder – though much has worn away in several places. Other markings include a “COLTS PATENT U.S.” stamp on the side of the frame and matching serial numbers save for the replaced brass trigger guard and partial grip frame.

Any serious collection of Civil War weaponry or memorabilia would benefit from the addition of this nice Colt revolver.  This is a pistol that appeals to a broad range of collectors and enthusiasts from the antebellum era to the Civil War, and through to the wild westward expansion and its many facets of interest.  [cm][ph:L]
