MODEL 1860 COLT ARMY REVOLVER

$1,695.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 2024-1952

A Civil War Colt Model 1860 Army revolver in good, but well-used condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.

This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. All matching serial numbers (63567) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap, cylinder, and even on the wedge. Serial number dates the manufacture to third quarter-1862.

Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are good and the cylinder indexes properly. Barrel address, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” shows only light wear amid some wear. Rolled cylinder scene is mostly gone. Patent date and serial number are clearly visible. The “COLTS / PATENT” mark on the left side is fine. Original nipples are in good condition; safety pins worn down. Brass trigger guard has small inspection stamp.

Gunmetal is dark pewter tone overall. Barrel shows numerous small dings. Grips are original one-piece walnut in well-used condition. Like most revolvers, the butt and wood grip show evidence of being used as a hammer. There is heavy wear to the lower, front corners on both sides. A single, worn cartouche is visible. At one time a narrow “lanyard channel” was cut into the bottom of the grip, running under the butt strap. This appears to have been filled and stained, likely by a previous collector. Barrel and loading lever exhibit a very slight wobble.

This is a classic, war-time production “Colt Army” revolver.   [jet][ph:L]
