This is a Model 1860 Colt Army revolver in very good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols.
This particular gun was rejected upon inspection and stamped “00” on the trigger guard to denote this, and sold off on the civilian market, hence no cartouche and varnished grip. The “error” on this revolver is that the serial number was mis-stamped on the cylinder (4534 instead of 3354). The correct “last four” were then lightly stamped on the rebated portion of the cylinder. Additional small inspection stamps are also on the cylinder.
This revolver is a .44 caliber, three-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. Matching serial numbers (93354) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, butt strap, and wedge. The cylinder was stamped in error and then restamped properly. Serial numbers date the manufacture to early-1863.
Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address is strong, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA”. The rolled cylinder scene remains completely visible, which is a rarity. The “COLT’S / PATENT” and the “44 CAL” stamps on the left side of the frame remain strong. Original nipples are good; two of the safety pins are smashed while the remainder are decent.
All gun metal is in very nice condition with smooth surfaces and traces of original blue in recessed areas and case colors on the frame. Brass trigger guard retains 80% of silver plate with brass showing through on side edges. “00” stamped on the front of the trigger guard. Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition and varnished. Very little wear; no cartouches.
This is a classic “Colt Army” revolver in excellent condition. [jet] [ph:L]
