This design was manufactured from 1860 through 1873, with over 200,000 produced. Of these, 127,156 were purchased by the U.S. government. This well-known six-shot, single-action revolver has an eight-inch round barrel rifled with seven grooves. Total length is 14 inches, weight is two pounds 11 ounces, and cylinder length is 1-13/16 inches. This revolver has a sharp naval engagement scene on its cylinder. It has a brass blade front sight, and the rear sight is a notch cut in the hammer lip. It has a brass trigger guard and iron backstrap. Recoil shield and butt of these military revolvers are notched to accommodate a detachable stock. The caliber is .44.
No pitting or oxidation is evident. The pistol functions perfectly. Made in 1863 the serial number is 119436 and all the numbers match throughout. The rifling is deep, and the bore is nice. At one point the original blue and casehardening factory finishes were removed from all the metal surfaces in spite of the fact the weapon shows little use. This was done to suit someone's taste, probably by a collector. This reflects in our pricing of this otherwise superb handgun. The walnut grips are in very good condition with a few small dings and dents near the iron back strap on the butt area. The US government inspector's cartouche is clearly visible on the one-piece grip.
This pistol would be a wonderful addition to any Civil War collection. And remember many firearms during their service had their original factory finishes removed in the field by the soldiers; it was a matter of taste. [pe][ph:L]
