Matching the musket in widespread use at the time, this pistol was designed to fire a .75 round ball rather than the smaller .69 ball of the Light Dragoon pistol. The pistol is based on the British "Sealed Pattern" of 1796 but is a "Commercial" version designed for use by the equivalent of our militia the Yeomanry Cavalry.
Regular British heavy Dragoons like the Horse Guards used the 1796 Heavy Dragoon model pistol across several famed battles of the Napoleonic Era and the Empire. This example is a variant of that type. It features a brass cap on the butt of the grip which is not regulation for the pattern, a pattern designed with no butt plate. The lock plate is un-marked, as made, with decorative borders remain strong along the outer edges. The lock assembly operates as new in both the half cock and full positions, while the top jaw and original screw are in place. The 9” barrel is in good condition. The smooth bore is dull but nice. The barrel has post-1813 Birmingham "Commercial" proof marks. The vent is clear, and the original iron ramrod can be drawn without excessive effort. All wood is in excellent condition given the piece’s age, with no evidence of damage or repairs, and hardly a gouge or dent throughout. All brass has an unmolested patina - including the ramrod thimble, trigger guard and extended strap, butt cap, and side plate. All gunmetal surfaces are smooth with a pleasing light patina. Finding a Heavy Dragoon pistol in such nice condition is difficult anymore. This is an ideal piece for the Napoleonic era or British military collector. [PE][ph:cm]
