This is the Light Dragoon/Light Cavalry pistol that fought the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812, much earlier and by far rarer than the New Land Pattern. This example is in great condition in the original flint configuration and is 100% complete and original even to the wooden brass tipped ramrod. The Government proofed iron barrel is just over 9-inches in length. The touch-hole inspector's mark is deep and clear. The lock plate is engraved with a Georgian crown over "GR". The tail of said lock is engraved "TOWER". A small crown and Broad Arrow are under the iron flash pan. The walnut stock shows the bumps and nicks from legitimate field use but has never been cleaned or sanded and has a pleasing mellow age patina. On the top wrist it bears the Storekeeper's stamp of a crown over1800 or possibly 1805 (stamped on the curve the last number did not strike). Another pertinent mark is found on the flat opposite the lock, this is "BO" (Board of Ordinance) followed by a Brown Arrow or "Crow's Foot". The mating number "VII" appears throughout the pistol including the top-jaw and its screw. Also neatly stamped in the stock ahead of the lock plate is a small "XVI" which is possibly a regimental designation for the 16th Light Dragoons a hard fighting unit. In 55 years of collecting, this is the only one of these the consignor has owned while he has had no fewer than a dozen New Land pistols. [pe] [ph:L]
