This is a fine Model 1851 Colt Navy revolver. It is a .36 caliber revolver with 6 shot cylinder, a 7 ½” octagonal barrel with attached loading lever, brass frame with round trigger guard. Serial numbers for this (third) model began at 4200 and ended around number 85000. This specimen is serial number 79006 which was manufactured in the first half of 1858. Barrel, frame, loading lever, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap all have this number. The wedge is unmarked.

The top of the barrel is clearly marked “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT HARTFORD CT” and the left side of the frame retains the clearly stamped “COLTS / PATENT / U.S.” The barrel and the cylinder each have additional small sub-inspection stamps. The cylinder features the rolled scene of a battle between the Texas Navy and the Mexican Navy. Nearly all of this remains on the cylinder which is quite rare. All cones are original and in good shape, but all safety pins are mostly flattened.

The trigger guard and backstrap are brass, with no silver plate remaining. The original grips are one-piece varnished walnut with faint cartouches visible on both sides.

Mechanically, the action is crisp and strong, and the cylinder indexes perfectly.  Revolver shows light use and wear overall with the usual dings under the butt. Gun metal has very nice matching light brown/gray tone.

An original and complete “martially marked” and inspected model 1851 Colt revolver.  [jet][ph:L]
