BACON MANUFACTURING CO. POCKET REVOLVER

$650.00 SOLD

Item Code: 595-1978

This .31 caliber, 4-inch, round barrel Bacon Manufacturing Company Pocket Model revolver rates very good for condition, with smooth gray metal, showing some thin brown on the lower frame, just a couple of light dings, legible barrel address with slight wear reading, BACON MF’G CO NORWICH CONN, and serial number 90 on the underside of the barrel and catch for ball-type the loading lever. The cylinder is fluted and not roll engraved. The wood grips are very good, tight, with good color, showing only minor handling scratches and very narrow shrinkage gaps at front and back with very slight rounding to the corner on the left. This conforms to Flayderman’s Second Model, which had an estimated production run of 3,000. The company made several different models and applied a number of different retailer’s names from c.1857 to 1867, with Hopkins and Allen taking over the factory in 1867 and continuing production for some time.

Thomas Bacon had been superintendent of manufacturing, and sometime subcontractor, for the Manhattan Firearms Company, but set up business for himself in Norwich, CT, when Manhattan moved its manufacturing to New Jersey in the late 1850s. This is a very good example of a Civil War pocket revolver that could have been carried by an officer as a personal side arm- few officers serving on foot would want a larger, heavier pistol on their belts on long marches- or by a traveler, etc. Pocket revolvers are an interesting collecting field and Bacon revolvers, with their various retailer markings, offer a good deal of variety in addition to the different models.   [sr][ph:m/L]
