Sharps made these four-barrel pepperbox pistols in several models from 1859 to 1874. Cleverly designed, the pistol loaded by sliding the four-barrel assembly forward and, rather than using a cylinder or rotating barrel assembly, fired four rimfire metallic cartridges in turn from a 2 X 2-barrel assembly, using a firing pin on the hammer that rotated when cocked. This is one of their .30 caliber versions, packing a little more punch than their .22 caliber versions, still useful mostly at close range- no more than a poker table’s width or so- but they could also be fired four times without reloading, were easily concealed, natural for self-defense. Civil War recruits, armed by well-wishers at home, created trouble with them in camp, but they are better known as a favorite of travelers, gamblers and denizens of the early west as a hideout gun. A Sharps four-barrel pepperbox was purportedly found on Wild Bill Hickok after his death.
This one is serial #14730 and fits the Model-2A configuration with straight, unfluted standing breech, 3” barrel assembly, and straight top to the checkered gutta percha grips at the frame. This rates very good for condition, with about ten percent original finish, mostly the blue on the barrel, stronger on the right rear and left front, no silver on the brass frame (as usual,) but good markings, just a little rubbed on the right, excellent grips and some color to the hammer. The brass frame is bright, with the top of the C. SHARPS & CO. / PHILADA. PA circular stamping on the right rubbed, but showing blue on the screw tips. The markings on the left, C. SHARPS / PATENT 1859, are very good and the screw heads show blue also, as do the barrel release and butt strap screw. The mechanics are good.
This would display well in a grouping of Old West material, perhaps laid out on a poker hand of four kings and an ace that has just been beaten by four aces and a king. [sr][ph:L]
