Remington made these ring-trigger, multi-barrel, repeating deringers in .32 caliber from 1863 to 1888. Production is estimated at around 17,500 (70 percent of the combined total of 25,000 in both .22 and .32 caliber according to Flayderman.) The barrel assembly tilts forward for loading or extracting cartridges. The ring trigger made it hard to tangle up in a pocket or fire by accident and actuates a rotating firing pin that moves to the next round as it is pulled, giving the user some firepower in a close-in fight across a card table, out a stagecoach window, or in a theatre alleyway.

This rates about very good, all original, with less than 15 percent finish, perhaps a bit more, but showing wear and spotting, and marks to the wood, but clear markings. The right channel of the barrel assembly is marked, “Elliot’s Patents. May 29. 1860 – Oct. 1. 1861.” The left channel reads: “Manufactured by E. Remington & Sons. Ilion. N.Y.” The dark grip panels are good but show carved initials, CFB on the lower left and the upper right, with a small B in the metal just above the left grip. The frame and barrel are smooth metal showing a mix of a muted silver and gray scattered darker gray spotting on the barrel assembly and thicker gray and brown spotting on the frame, more severe on the right than the left. These came in a variety of finishes- blue, nickel, silvered and a combination of nickel and blue. This shows wear spots but not flaking so we take it as one of their silver finish versions.  Mechanics function as expected; rifling visible in barrels, though are somewhat dirty and could use a good cleaning.

The serial number is 19260 inside the frame, likely dating it after the war given the production numbers but as a type it would fit a Civil War or early western display with production starting in 1863 and running right through the Wild West era.  [sr] [ph:m]
