This is a Civil War Model 1860 Colt Army revolver in good original condition. In production from 1860 through 1873, these handguns were the successor to the Colt Third Model Dragoon pistols. The Model 1860 Army was the major sidearm in use by U.S. troops during the Civil War with over 127,000 Colt revolvers acquired by the Union government during the conflict.
This revolver is a .44 caliber, four-screw model with a 6-shot rebated cylinder and an 8” long barrel. Matching serial numbers (9705) on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and butt strap. Cylinder is pitted where patent and serial number were located, and the wedge is numbered 9657. Serial numbers date the manufacture to mid-1861.
Sidearm is equipped with recoil shield cutouts on the frame and the small notch on the base of the butt plate. Mechanics are crisp and strong. Barrel address is light, “ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW - YORK U.S. AMERICA”. Some of the rolled cylinder scene remains visible except for the portion where the patent date and serial number are located. This corroded portion is as just as wide as the frame is on the bottom and is likely the result of moisture collected between the frame and cylinder. The “COLTS / PATENT” stamp on the left side remains visible. The “44 CAL.” is worn off. Original nipples show wear; safety pins smashed down.
Brass trigger guard has a golden patina. All gunmetal is patchy brown with portions of brighter metal showing through. Moderate scattered surface oxidation overall, likely stored in damp environment. One of the four frame screws is inserted from right side. Grips are original one-piece walnut in good condition with moderate wear along bottom edges. One faint cartouche on left side.
This is a classic, early war production “Colt Army” revolver in decent condition. [jet] [ph:L]
