This is a Model 1862 Colt Police revolver. This is a .36 caliber revolver with a five-shot rebated half fluted cylinder, a 6 ½” long round barrel with attached loading lever, and an iron frame with brass trigger guard (round) and back strap.
Serial numbers for this model began at 1 in 1861 and ended around 48,000 in 1873. This specimen has serial number 14548 which was manufactured in late 1862. Matching serial number is found on barrel, frame, wedge, trigger guard, and back strap.
The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA” and the left side of the frame is marked “COLTS / PATENT”. The cylinder is marked only with “PAT SEPT 10TH 185_”.
The original grips are one-piece varnished walnut in fine condition.
Mechanics operate very well. Gun metal is overall dark gray covered in dark brown spotting. Brass trigger guard and back strap are clean with mellow patina; no silver plate remaining.
